POWERADE FAB 50 Rankings: Week 15

Powerade Fab 50
Year:

Week:
The winter-playing states are: Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas.

Rankings reflect matches played through Sunday, March 11.

So, just how close are the top teams in California?

The Southern California Regional Division I tournament helped answer that question. Six of the seven matches were one-goal affairs, including the dramatic final with Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) upending Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) 3-2 in a battle between the POWERADE FAB 50 top two ranked programs entering the match.

With everyone now finished for the winter except the Texas public schools, there figures to be little movement in the upcoming weeks. However, a few previously ranked teams fell from the FAB 50 this week to make room for California and Texas programs that earned spots through key victories. As Texas plays out, it is likely the teams bumped from last week's FAB 50 will make a return in the month that remains for the winter season.
2011-2012 POWERADE FAB 50 Girls' Soccer Winter Rankings: Week 15
RK (LW)SCHOOL (CITY, STATE)RECCOMMENT
1 (2)Aliso Niguel
Aliso Viejo, CA
23-1-4Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I champion. Southern Section Division 1 champion. Aliso Niguel pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory over Los Osos to win the regional title and secure this year's POWERADE FAB 50 winter No. 1 ranking. Aliso Niguel, which had trailed in every championship match this year -- tournaments and playoffs -- fell behind Los Osos 2-0 in the second half before a pair of Lindsay Doyle goals tied the match and Lauren Miller's goal won it 3-2. While five seniors, led by Oregon State-bound keeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme, have made college choices, the team started six impact underclassmen, including Doyle and Miller.
2 (4)Boyd
McKinney, TX
15-1-2Boyd is back in a familiar position -- No. 2 in the POWERADE FAB 50. After two turns at No. 1 this year, Boyd is second, right where it finished in 2011. Last week, Boyd handled Naaman Forest 5-0 and North Garland 8-0.
3 (5)Marcus
Flower Mound, TX
19-2-1Emily Morrow and Natalie Schmutz scored goals to lift Marcus past Plano West 2-0 in a battle of Top 10 teams last week.
4 (1)Los Osos
Rancho Cucamonga, CA
25-1-3Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I runner-up. Southern Section Division 2 champion. Los Osos' greatest season ever ended with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Aliso Niguel in the regional final. Ifeoma Onumonu scored both goals as Los Osos built a 2-0 lead that it was not able to hold in the second half. Onumonu ended the season with 30 goals. On the way to the section final, Los Osos defeated San Diego's top two-ranked teams in Carlsbad and La Costa Canyon.
5 (6)Mansfield
Mansfield, TX
15-1-4Kelbie Gehm scored twice as Mansfield defeated South Grand Prairie to push this program's undefeated run to 12 since a setback to No. 2 Boyd.
6 (3)Plano West
Plano, TX
13-2-4Despite a loss to No. 3 Marcus last week, Plano West remains tied for first place in the district standings.
7 (10)Ursuline Academy
Dallas, TX
22-2Season complete. TAPPS Division I state champion. Natalie Barnet and Kellie Schnurr scored second-half goals to lift Ursuline over St. Agnes 2-0 for the Bears' 22nd straight TAPPS state title. The key results for Ursuline this year include a 3-0 win over Florida state champion American Heritage, a 4-0 win over nationally ranked Kingwood. The team's losses were a 2-0 setback to Marcus and a 2-1 loss to Plano West, a pair of top five teams.
8 (11)Saint Thomas Aquinas School
Fort Lauderdale, FL
26-1-1Season complete. Florida Class 5A state champion. This might have been coach Carlos Giron's most surprising state title. After losing 10 starters from last year's national No. 1 team, the Raiders put together a second straight undefeated season in Florida and rallied late for a 3-2 win over Hagerty in the state final. Ashley Cardounel delivered the match-winning goal in overtime, giving the Raiders a record 12th state title. Since the 13 schools ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas will soon sort out their standing on the field, it is likely the Raiders will creep up in the rankings in the next few weeks.
9 (12)San Clemente
San Clemente, CA
18-3-7Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 runner-up. San Clemente, making its fifth straight Southern Section final appearance, lost for the third straight year -- this time to league rival Aliso Niguel. 16-1-5Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinalist. Harvard-Westlake's season ended with a shootout loss to San Clemente in the section quarterfinals. Harvard-Westlake's only regular-season loss was to Aliso Niguel. The team won the Mission League title.

17 (17)La Costa Canyon
Carlsbad, CA
20-4-3Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I quarterfinalist. San Diego Section Division II champion. La Costa Canyon's bid to knock off No. 1 teams in back-to-back weeks came up short. LCC defeated then No. 1 Westview to capture the San Diego Section Division II crown on March 3. Only three days later, LCC had a shot at then No. 1 Los Osos end in a 2-1 setback.
18 (18)Westview
San Diego, CA
24-2-2Season complete. CIF San Diego Section Division II runner-up. Westview lost to La Costa Canyon 2-0 in the second final, ending the team's season. Westview, despite a stellar season, was not awarded an at-large bid to the Southern California Regional tournament. Westview forced La Costa Canyon's keeper into 10 saves but could not break through in the section final defeat, which marked the team's second loss to LCC this season.
19 (15)Sunny Hills
Fullerton, CA
30-2Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 2 runner-up. Sunny Hills lost to Los Osos 1-0, ending the team's season. Like San Diego power Westview, Sunny Hills was not able to secure an at-large spot in the Southern California Regional tournament. Sunny Hills' two losses this year were both 1-0 setbacks, the first to No. 1 Aliso Niguel and the second to No. 4 Los Osos.
20 (19)Santa Margarita Catholic
RanchoStMargarita, CA
19-5-3Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division II champion. Southern Section Division 1 semifinalist. Junior Samantha Trenary, who has committed to Southern Cal, netted the game-winner as Santa Margarita edged Bishop Amat 2-1 in the regional final. The victory marked the first regional crown for this storied program. The Eagles advanced to the regional tournament despite falling to Aliso Niguel in penalty kicks in the Southern Section semifinals. With only two seniors on the roster this year, Santa Margarita projects as one of the nation's top returning programs for next season.
21 (20)Corona Del Mar
Newport Beach, CA
22-3-2Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinalist. Corona del Mar's season ended with a 1-0 loss to Santa Margarita in the section quarterfinals. Corona del Mar graduates four senior starters: Sarah Cox (Stanford), Allyson Brahs (Washington), Sydney Raguse (Michigan) and Amanda Stephensen (George Mason). Among the 21 projected returners are UCLA commit Annie Alvarado and UC Santa Barbara commit Maddie O'Connor.
