POWERADE FAB 50 Rankings: Week 15

Powerade Fab 50
Year:

Week:
The winter-playing states are: Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas.

Rankings reflect matches played through Sunday, March 11.

So, just how close are the top teams in California?

The Southern California Regional Division I tournament helped answer that question. Six of the seven matches were one-goal affairs, including the dramatic final with Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) upending Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) 3-2 in a battle between the POWERADE FAB 50 top two ranked programs entering the match.

With everyone now finished for the winter except the Texas public schools, there figures to be little movement in the upcoming weeks. However, a few previously ranked teams fell from the FAB 50 this week to make room for California and Texas programs that earned spots through key victories. As Texas plays out, it is likely the teams bumped from last week's FAB 50 will make a return in the month that remains for the winter season.
2011-2012 POWERADE FAB 50 Girls' Soccer Winter Rankings: Week 15
RK (LW)SCHOOL (CITY, STATE)RECCOMMENT
1 (2)Aliso Niguel
Aliso Viejo, CA
23-1-4Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I champion. Southern Section Division 1 champion. Aliso Niguel pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory over Los Osos to win the regional title and secure this year's POWERADE FAB 50 winter No. 1 ranking. Aliso Niguel, which had trailed in every championship match this year -- tournaments and playoffs -- fell behind Los Osos 2-0 in the second half before a pair of Lindsay Doyle goals tied the match and Lauren Miller's goal won it 3-2. While five seniors, led by Oregon State-bound keeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme, have made college choices, the team started six impact underclassmen, including Doyle and Miller.
2 (4)Boyd
McKinney, TX
15-1-2Boyd is back in a familiar position -- No. 2 in the POWERADE FAB 50. After two turns at No. 1 this year, Boyd is second, right where it finished in 2011. Last week, Boyd handled Naaman Forest 5-0 and North Garland 8-0.
3 (5)Marcus
Flower Mound, TX
19-2-1Emily Morrow and Natalie Schmutz scored goals to lift Marcus past Plano West 2-0 in a battle of Top 10 teams last week.
4 (1)Los Osos
Rancho Cucamonga, CA
25-1-3Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I runner-up. Southern Section Division 2 champion. Los Osos' greatest season ever ended with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Aliso Niguel in the regional final. Ifeoma Onumonu scored both goals as Los Osos built a 2-0 lead that it was not able to hold in the second half. Onumonu ended the season with 30 goals. On the way to the section final, Los Osos defeated San Diego's top two-ranked teams in Carlsbad and La Costa Canyon.
5 (6)Mansfield
Mansfield, TX
15-1-4Kelbie Gehm scored twice as Mansfield defeated South Grand Prairie to push this program's undefeated run to 12 since a setback to No. 2 Boyd.
6 (3)Plano West
Plano, TX
13-2-4Despite a loss to No. 3 Marcus last week, Plano West remains tied for first place in the district standings.
7 (10)Ursuline Academy
Dallas, TX
22-2Season complete. TAPPS Division I state champion. Natalie Barnet and Kellie Schnurr scored second-half goals to lift Ursuline over St. Agnes 2-0 for the Bears' 22nd straight TAPPS state title. The key results for Ursuline this year include a 3-0 win over Florida state champion American Heritage, a 4-0 win over nationally ranked Kingwood. The team's losses were a 2-0 setback to Marcus and a 2-1 loss to Plano West, a pair of top five teams.
8 (11)Saint Thomas Aquinas School
Fort Lauderdale, FL
26-1-1Season complete. Florida Class 5A state champion. This might have been coach Carlos Giron's most surprising state title. After losing 10 starters from last year's national No. 1 team, the Raiders put together a second straight undefeated season in Florida and rallied late for a 3-2 win over Hagerty in the state final. Ashley Cardounel delivered the match-winning goal in overtime, giving the Raiders a record 12th state title. Since the 13 schools ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas will soon sort out their standing on the field, it is likely the Raiders will creep up in the rankings in the next few weeks.
9 (12)San Clemente
San Clemente, CA
18-3-7Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 runner-up. San Clemente, making its fifth straight Southern Section final appearance, lost for the third straight year -- this time to league rival Aliso Niguel. Nikki Faris gave San Clemente a 1-0 lead in the section final, but the team surrendered two goals in the final 14 minutes of a 2-1 setback.
10 (13)Harvard Westlake
North Hollywood, CA
16-1-5Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinalist. Harvard-Westlake's season ended with a shootout loss to San Clemente in the section quarterfinals. Harvard-Westlake's only regular-season loss was to Aliso Niguel. The team won the Mission League title.
11 (14)Klein Oak
Spring, TX
18-0-1Amanda Fox had three goals and two assists last week as Klein Oak cruised to victories over Klein Forest and Klein.
12 (9)Claremont
Claremont, CA
28-2-3Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I quarterfinalist. Southern Section Division 3 champion. After defeating Bishop Amat for the Southern Section Division 3 title, Claremont's season ended with a 1-0 loss to Aliso Niguel in the regional quarterfinals.
13 (NR)Fossil Ridge
Keller, TX
12-4-1Fossil Ridge is this week's big mover following a second win over Coppell this season to take over first place in the district standings.
14 (7)Coppell
Coppell, TX
15-3-4Coppell fell from the top 10 following a second loss to Fossil Ridge and a draw with No. 15 Southlake Carroll.
15 (8)Carroll
Southlake, TX
20-2-1After defeating Justin Northwest, Carroll played to a 2-2 draw with Coppell last week.
16 (16)Carlsbad
Carlsbad, CA
19-5-1Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I semifinalist. San Diego Section Division I champion. Carlsbad, which had never won a league title before this year, won the section crown and advanced to the regional semifinals before falling to Los Osos 3-2. Cindy Garcia scored both goals, the first when Carlsbad was down 2-0 and the latter in the closing seconds of the match.
17 (17)La Costa Canyon
Carlsbad, CA
20-4-3Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I quarterfinalist. San Diego Section Division II champion. La Costa Canyon's bid to knock off No. 1 teams in back-to-back weeks came up short. LCC defeated then No. 1 Westview to capture the San Diego Section Division II crown on March 3. Only three days later, LCC had a shot at then No. 1 Los Osos end in a 2-1 setback.
18 (18)Westview
San Diego, CA
24-2-2Season complete. CIF San Diego Section Division II runner-up. Westview lost to La Costa Canyon 2-0 in the second final, ending the team's season. Westview, despite a stellar season, was not awarded an at-large bid to the Southern California Regional tournament. Westview forced La Costa Canyon's keeper into 10 saves but could not break through in the section final defeat, which marked the team's second loss to LCC this season.
19 (15)Sunny Hills
Fullerton, CA
30-2Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 2 runner-up. Sunny Hills lost to Los Osos 1-0, ending the team's season. Like San Diego power Westview, Sunny Hills was not able to secure an at-large spot in the Southern California Regional tournament. Sunny Hills' two losses this year were both 1-0 setbacks, the first to No. 1 Aliso Niguel and the second to No. 4 Los Osos.
20 (19)Santa Margarita Catholic
RanchoStMargarita, CA
19-5-3Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division II champion. Southern Section Division 1 semifinalist. Junior Samantha Trenary, who has committed to Southern Cal, netted the game-winner as Santa Margarita edged Bishop Amat 2-1 in the regional final. The victory marked the first regional crown for this storied program. The Eagles advanced to the regional tournament despite falling to Aliso Niguel in penalty kicks in the Southern Section semifinals. With only two seniors on the roster this year, Santa Margarita projects as one of the nation's top returning programs for next season.
21 (20)Corona Del Mar
Newport Beach, CA
22-3-2Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinalist. Corona del Mar's season ended with a 1-0 loss to Santa Margarita in the section quarterfinals. Corona del Mar also had an early season 3-0 loss to Westview. In between, the team rolled off a 15-match win streak, won a league title and proved itself as one of the top teams in the nation. Corona del Mar graduates four senior starters: Sarah Cox (Stanford), Allyson Brahs (Washington), Sydney Raguse (Michigan) and Amanda Stephensen (George Mason). Among the 21 projected returners are UCLA commit Annie Alvarado and UC Santa Barbara commit Maddie O'Connor.

Los Osos soccer finishes with No. 4 national ranking

Los Osos High School girls soccer coach Mychal Armstrong escaped to the mountains after the Grizzlies lost a 2-0 second-half lead in a heart-wrenching 3-2 loss to Aliso Niguel in the CIF Southern California Division I Regional championship on Saturday. When he returned, Los Osos' lone loss of the season in the last game of the season had dropped espn.com's top-ranked team in the country only three spots to No. 4.
Previously ranked No. 2, Aliso Niguel naturally ascended to the No. 1 spot in the nation courtesy of three-goal flurry in a 10-minute span in the final of what is the closest California comes to a state soccer tournament. Los Osos (25-1-3) won the CIF-SS Division 3 title but the Grizzlies were painfully close to winning a mythical national championship seeing as they were also ranked No. 1 nationally on MaxPreps.com before slipping to No. 2 after the loss.
"We're the CIF champions and we're happy," Armstrong said. "We only had one loss all season and that's a great season. Altogether I know it's tough for the girls right now but that's the way the season ended."
Armstrong was not veiled in his opinion of the officiating in the postseason, Saturday being no exception.
"The refereeing was absolutely dreadful," he said. "I know people don't want to say it or at least be as vocal as I am about it, but it was absolutely horrendous. That's nothing new in CIF. It was terrible all through the playoffs, but it really hurt us on Saturday."

Div 1 Los Osos vs Alisa Niguel

Aliso Niguel saves best comeback for last

OCVARSITY.COM
DOWNEY - In a season that was defined by a habitual ability to overcome deficits in the biggest of matches, the Aliso Niguel girls soccer team produced its most impressive rally of the season to come away with an improbable regional title Saturday.
Freshman Lauren Miller capped a stunning three-goal, second-half rally with the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute, as the Wolverines edged Los Osos of Ranchho Cucamonga, 3-2, in the CIF Southern California Regional Division 1 championship match at Warren High.
“I’m so happy I was able to do this for the seniors who have done so much for me,” Miller said. “We came out soft and weren’t finishing our chances, but we knew that we could come back and we did.”
Junior Lindsay Doyle scored twice in a four-minute span as Aliso Niguel (23-1-4) handed Los Osos (25-1-3) its first and only defeat of the season.
The Wolverines join San Clemente (2009) and Esperanza (2010) as the only county teams to win both the CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF Division 1 Regional championships in the same season.
Aliso Niguel, which came from behind to win in the title matches of the Aliso Cup, the Mater Dei Premier Invitational and the CIF-SS Division 1 championship match, will also likely finish the season as the No.1 ranked team in the country according to ESPN Rise. The Wolverines entered the match ranked No. 2 behind Los Osos.
“This came from our heart, desire and passion,” Wolverines coach Randy Dodge said. "We went down 2-0 to a great team that hadn’t lost all season and scored three goals with not a lot of time left.
"We’ve been the comeback kids all season, and we fight, scratch and claw to get back in the game.”
Defense was the story early in the match as the Grizzlies’ backline defenders stopped the Wolverines' initial offensive attack of the match.
Aliso Niguel’s defense, led by juniors Nicole Smolinski and Breanne Chilton-Eddy, along with seniors Tegan Cramer and Jordan Ansara, responded by shutting down the initial possessions of the Grizzlies in the middle and attacking third.
Los Osos had a scoring opportunity in the ninth minute, but senior goalie Sammy Prud’homme charged up from the goal to punch the ball away from box, just before Grizzlies senior Ifeoma Onumonu could get to it and attempt a shot.
The Grizzlies again nearly took the lead in the 23rd minute, but a shot by Grizzlies junior Jazzmin Mancilla sailed just over the crossbar.
One minute later, the Wolverines attempted to clear the ball away from the attacking third, but it deflected off the face of Grizzlies sophomore Sydney Johnson and back into the middle of the box, where Onumonu controlled it and tapped a shot past Prud’homme and into the far post corner to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead.
Los Osos continued to possess the ball into the attacking third later in the half, but the Wolverines defense stiffened and repelled their attack.
Strong defensive plays late in the half by Mancilla and Mariah Rojas helped Los Osos take the one-goal advantage into the intermission.
Onumonu added her second goal of the match in the 46th minute, as she got to a loose ball before Prud’homme could secure a save and sent a shot rolling into the back of the net.
In the 55th minute, Los Osos nearly took a 3-0 lead, but Prud’homme came up with an improbable diving save to deny a wide-open shot attempt by Grizzlies sophomore Aubrielle Camacho.
“I was still heated about the second goal they scored, but knew that we could score two goals and wanted to give us a chance,” Prud’homme said. “She (Camacho) was wide open and I just had to hold my ground and make the best play I could.”
One minute later, the Wolverines cut the margin to 2-1, as Miller crossed a pass over to Doyle who rolled a shot into the corner of the goal.
Doyle struck again with the match-equalizer in the 60th minute, as she freed herself in the box and once again rolled a shot past Grizzlies freshman goalie Anne Bailey and into the near corner of the goal.
“It was amazing that both shots I hit on the ground and into the corner,” Doyle said. “The second after I got the first goal, I knew that our team could win this match.”
Six minutes after tying the match, the Wolverines’ rejuvenated offensive attack produced the decisive goal of the contest. Off a pass down field from junior Alexandria Howell, Miller rolled a shot past Bailey and into the net.
“It was a through ball and I was just thinking to myself 'don’t hit it at the goalie,' ” Miller said. “I knew that if I hit it on frame, someone would be there to knock it in. But when I saw it cross the line, I thought it was some sort of miracle.”
Smolinski helped Aliso Niguel clinch the win in the final moments of the match, twice clearing balls out of the attacking third.

Valley View CIF Div 2 Boys Soccer Champions 2012

Golden Goal Toppels Cap Valley

Almost sounds like a repeat and well it was for the Capistrano Valley Boys Soccer team in the CIF Div 2 Final match against Valley View. In the fourth minute of play Valley View's Guana finished a corner kick with a header to the back of the neck for the golden goal in the 1st OT period. The crowd errupted and the Cap Valley boys fell where they stood, I am sure, searching for something to say that this was not happening to them for the second year in a row. Cap Valley was playing  for either VV to make a mistake or for the match to go into a PK shootout playing with five defenders and clogging the center of the pitch. It looked as though the match was theirs in the 62 minute of play when a penalty was called against VV in their penalty area. Lined up for the PK the striker struck the ball and the keeper with what only could be called "cat" like reflexes blocked the PK shot. The momentum of the match was all Valley View except for a couple of  minutes in the match and for the PK call.  Valley View was deserving of the win.
